Logan Shaffner is a Calgary-based tap dancer, choreographer, and emerging interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of rhythm, music, and movement. Her practice is rooted in jazz and tap traditions, with a growing focus on collaboration between dancers and live musicians.
Logan began her training at the age of six, studying at several competitive studios in Calgary before developing a strong focus in tap dance. She was a member of the Tri-Tone Rhythm Ensemble for eight years, where she trained under internationally recognized artists including Dianne Walker, Brenda Bufalino, Acia Gray, and Travis Knights. Through Tri-Tone, she had the opportunity to train and perform internationally, including attending the Chicago Human Rhythm Project in 2019. During this time, she was exposed to the work of Daniel Borak, whose musical approach to tap continues to influence her artistic voice.
She graduated from Central Memorial High School’s Performing and Visual Arts program in 2021, receiving the Dance Innovator Award in her final year. Following high school, Logan continued her training through the Professional Training Program at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, where she deepened her understanding of vernacular jazz, explored choreography, and began working more closely with live music. She is also a certified tap dance instructor through Tasha Lawson’s Tap Teacher Training Program.
As a choreographer, Logan has created and presented work across both studio and performance contexts. Her piece Conversations, originally developed during her time at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, has been presented at the Black and White Ball, Fluid Festival 2025, and Tap Conversations in Airdrie in 2026 alongside Danny Neilson. More recently, it was also shared in a pitch setting through Springboard Performance.
Alongside her performance work, Logan is an active teacher and choreographer in the Calgary dance community, currently teaching at Dance Lab Studio, Turner Danceworks, and Freehouse Dance Plus. She choreographs extensively within the competitive dance circuit each season and has received multiple awards recognizing her choreographic work. This ongoing practice continues to expand her artistic voice, particularly in developing structure, musicality, and performance clarity.
Logan is the founder of The Pocket, a new and emerging collective in Calgary focused on collaborative creation between artists creating dance and music alongside each other. This project marks a significant step in her artistic development, expanding her practice into music creation and interdisciplinary performance.
As an artist, Logan is particularly interested in the relationship between music and movement, exploring how rhythm can function as a shared language between forms. Her work is informed by both the history of jazz and tap and a desire to contribute new perspectives to their ongoing evolution.
